As a way to help maintain our neighborhood, the SVHAI Board has negotiated an agreement with Sheldon's Nursery to offer discounted services to our members.

If you have piles of yard debris, weeds, dead trees, etc. you can call Sheldon's Nursery and arrange for a clean-up. As long as your dues are current, they will send a crew out to your property for the special rate of $25/hr per man ($75 min.), plus dump fees of $70 maximum per truckload – partial loads will be prorated. (Non-member rates are $30/hr ($90 min.) and dump fees are $80 per truckload.)

Sheldon's is a full-service Landscape Installation and Maintenance Contractor. They have been located at 4999 N. Sabino Canyon Rd. since 1978, and are licensed, bonded and insured.

Please help us keep our neighborhood clean, including our alleys. Call Sheldon's today and ask for Sue: 529-0609.

Spring Neighborhood Cleanup and Recycling Print

Our goal is two cleanup events per year with a permanent schedule so that members can better plan for them. Each year, we will schedule roll-off sessions for the Saturday after Easter and the Saturday before Halloween (with at least a week before Halloween).
The October 2009 cleanup event was used by 64 members, some with multiple loads. Sahuaro Waste Management hauled away six roll-offs. We also filled a "Habitat for Humanity" truck with recyclable building supplies and a load of old electronics to RISE.
There is no charge for roll-off use by SVHAI members. Member dues pay for the roll-offs, but this year we will suggest donations to help offset costs. This is still a bargain compared to the payments required at the County landfills.

THE FIRST 2010 CLEANUP:
Date – Saturday 10 April 2010
Time – 7:00AM to 4:00PM
Location - On Pantano Road south of Cloud Road (just north of where the road narrows)

Membership Checklist – For a record of program use, users will be asked to sign a membership check list at the cleanup site and will be encouraged to update their dues payments.

Electronics and Metals - RISE Equipment Recycling Center will collect ewaste for recycling from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. The following items are accepted free of charge: computers, monitors, keyboards, mice, printers, copiers, fax machines, surge protectors, small appliances, microwaves, VCR's and DVD players. There is a $10 recycle fee per TV. RISE is a non-profit organization, tax deduction receipts will be available. They also collect at 1134 S Park, Tucson, AZ 85719, telephone: 623-7162.

Clothing and Household Goods - A truck from the Christian Family Care Agency will also be present from 8-12. They accept: Furniture, clothing, household goods, books, and other collectables.

Hazardous Waste – No liquids, tires, or batteries will be accepted for the cleanup. These may be disposed of at the City/County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) offices. The closest HHW site to SV is the Eastside City Hall, 7575 E. Speedway, open from 8 a.m. to noon the first Saturday of every month.

Waste Management - 2nd trash container charges. Print

It has come to our attention that several members have received a notice from Waste Management indicating that members will now be charged for the second trash container. Previously under our original agreement members were not being charged for the second trash container. When W/M renewed our contract it was greed that those who had not been charged in the past will be "grandfathered" as such in the new contract.

The section of the contract reads ...

Special instructions:
Service 1x week trash / 1x week recycle - $12.57 per home –deliver 96 gallon recycle container to all homeowners at no charge – If someone requires a smaller recycle container we can switch that out at no additional charge – homeowners that have 2nd trash container are grandfathered in at no charge, anyone ordering an extra trash container is $8.50 per container, per month --- increase exceptions due to uncontrollable cost increases in fuel, landfill or regulatory – with documentation for increase.

The power of Email and Burglaries. Print
Written by Dean Stith
Thursday, 18 February 2010 19:11
On Tuesday, February 16th, a home near Craycroft and River Road was burglarized. The homeowner had a security camera and was able to capture images of the burgler. The homeowner immediately sent out an email to neighboring firends to be on the lookout. Portions of the email read ...

This morning I arrived home after volunteering at school (around 10:00 am ish)...I came home to a nightmare.  We were burglarized (and badly...they took EVERYTHING...things you would not even think would be of interest including many things from [our childrens] rooms).  Our TVs are gone our silverware, our passports, walkie talkies, kids nintendos, social security cards, checkbook, coin collection, wedding ring (and all jewelry) ETC.  As you can imagine I am very very shaken.  Our house was totally rummaged through (drawers, closets etc.) .  My children are at my friends house now as we are trying to clean up and remove the finger print dusing stuff.  Of course things can be replaced but, our main concern is for our children to feel safe and not think this is going to happen again etc.

I was less than four minutes from arriving to him here in my house.  I am sending the photos so you (some of you live around me) can be on the look out ( also, the police said that there was a similar burglary on Feb. 11th - with this same guy they think from the description) around Sabino Canyon/Cloud (where some of you live).   If you  wouldn't mind passing this info. on to your neighbors/friends and letting them know about this guy (so they can see the car --- although the blazer is a stolen vehichle) --- you never know if someone knows him/has seen him.  Please be safe and lock all doors/set alarms, activate neighborhood watch groups etc."

The story does not end here however. The emails continued just a week later on Thursday the 18th ...

The power of email. This was one of our friends that got burglarized on Tuesday morning and they live in the Swan and River area. She emailed these pictures out to St. Michael's, where her kids go to school. Someone from the school emailed them to their baseball team. Someone from the baseball team emailed them to neighbors they knew in the area. One of the neighbors printed copies of the pictures and was walking door-to-door to pass them out and she actually saw the truck in her neighbor's driveway 3 houses away. She called 911 and the guy was arrested Wednesday morning. He was one street away from where these pictures were taken on Tuesday morning. Channel 4 is running a spot tonight on the evening news about the power of email. Unfortunately, our friends did not get any of their stolen items back. The guy said he sold everything and used the money to buy drugs. We are getting an alarm installed.

Word travels fast, but only if you pass the word. This example shows the power that we all have in protecting our neighborhoods. Please report any suspicious activity to the proper authorities, and do not forget to keep your local HOA involved too.
